Environmental Activities of EAC at the Power Stations

Further to the monitoring of the atmospheric air quality in the vicinity of the Power Stations, EAC also carries out measurements of various pollutants found in flue gas emissions from the boilers as well as the gas turbines of the three Power Stations.

The primary aims of EAC are:

  • The conservation, protection and improvement of environmental quality where this is feasible.
  • The protection of the health of the personnel and the general public
  • The promotion and application of various measures for combating possible environmental problems
  • The prudent and rational use and handling of procedures and materials, and
  • The practical demonstration of interest for the necessary respect to the environment.

Air quality around Power Stations

In line with the Licenses of Gas Emissions which are issued by the Department of Labor Inspection of the Ministry of Labor and National Insurance, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus is under the obligation to carry out continuous measurements of air quality around the three Power Stations at points which are approved by the Ministry of Labor and National Insurance.

In the past various environmental studies had been carried out for the existing Power Stations. EAC had taken seriously into consideration the suggestions of the studies and had invested substantial funds and endeavor for their materialization. The air quality monitoring around the Power Stations is one of EAC activities which are aimed at protecting the environment.

Over the period 1989-1993 EAC, with the help of Consultant Environmentalists, carried out various environmental studies for the new development projects. Indeed such studies were carried out for the Vassilikos Power Station as well as for the expansions at the Power Stations at Moni and Dekelia.

For the purposes of the environmental studies EAC purchased in 1989 air quality monitoring units for the continuous measurement and recording of ground level concentrations of sulphur dioxide, ozon, nitrogen oxides and dust.

Together with the fundamental monitoring units for measuring the above parameters additional auxiliary apparatus was purchased which was necessary for the collection and processing of the parameters. This apparatus included a software package, computers printers and other associated equipment. Two sets of equipment were installed in two caravans.

This way it was possible to carry out measurements at two different sites at the same time, in the vicinity of the Power Stations.

The environmental studies were carried out in sequence at Vassilikos, Dekelia, and Moni. Upon completion of the Study for Moni Power Station the Consultant Environmentalist suggested that two measuring stations be upgraded and be utilized for future use around the Power Stations of the EAC. In addition and in accordance with the supplementary terms of the Building Permit of the erection of units 5 and 6 at Dekelia Power Station it was necessary to carry out continuous monitoring of the air quality around the area by installing instruments for the continuous measurement  and recording of concentrations of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and ozone. Also instrumentation was included enabling the recording of meteorological parameters such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature and relative humidity.

On the basis of the above it was decided in 1992 to upgrade the two existing units and also proceed with the purchase of yet another two units so that two units be used at each of two existing Power Stations. For the Vassilikos Power Station two additional new Units were purchased in 2000 which were put into normal service in the same year.

Measurement of Pollutants in Flue Gas Emissions

In accordance with the Licenses for Gas Emissions, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus is under the obligation to carry out continuous measurements of the pollutants found in the gaseous emissions from the boilers as well as the gas turbines of the three Power Stations.

The measurements of the pollutants in the gaseous emissions are carried out by means of specialized instruments with which the Power Stations are equipped. These instruments measure the quantities of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, dust etc.
