Emission of Carbon Dioxide
In accordance with the Kyoto protocol, the European Union and its Member States have undertaken the obligation to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gases described in Appendix A of the Protocol, by 8% over the period 2008-2012 in comparison with the 1990 levels.
The aim of Directive 2003/87/EC is to contribute to the effective fulfillment of the undertaking of European Union and its Member States in a well regulated European market for greenhouse gases trading.
Member States have already ensured that the involved installations for certain activities are in possession of a License for Greenhouse Gas Emissions as from 1st January 2005 and that they monitor and report their respective greenhouse gas emissions as these have been determined for these activities.
Over the period 2005-2007 the Authority has entered into a contract with an outside Consultant for the certification of the carbon dioxide emissions. Every year, a relevant report is prepared by the Authority and results are subsequently certified and the report is forwarded to the responsible Competent Authority of the State which in this case is the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment which has assured the responsibility for carrying out a National Scheme for the appointment of the right for carbon dioxide emission among all the installations included over the new period of 2008-2012. The three Power Stations of the Authority are among 13 industrial installations which constitute the entirety of the installations involved.
