Event of CIGRE Cyprus for the energy future of Cyprus

The first event of the CIGRE Cyprus committee on "Challenges and Trends in Future Power Systems" was held with great success on May 9, hosted by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) at its headquarters in Nicosia. The CIGRE Cyprus committee consists of more than 40 experts in electricity systems from various governmental and non-governmental organizations and universities in Cyprus, and is the local committee of the CIGRE (Conseil International des Grands Réseaux Electriques) international organization based in Paris with more than 15,000 members worldwide.

The event was opened with welcome remarks by the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of EAC, Mrs. Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, who stressed the intention of EAC to lead a cost-effective energy transition in Cyprus, developing its electrical system to be efficient, intelligent, digital and catalyst in the development of emerging technologies. Invited speakers from leading transmission and distribution system operators in Europe (National Grid - UK, RTE - France, and BKW Energie AG - Switzerland) shared with the attendees the latest developments and future challenges in the net-zero transition of their national energy systems.

Next, speakers from the Cyprus Transmission and Distribution System Operators, Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority and the University of Cyprus analyzed the challenges and opportunities of Cyprus for the energy transition of the island and the achievement of the goals of the National Plan for Energy and Climate. Among others, the technical and regulatory challenges for the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources in both transmission and distribution systems, the role of emerging technologies (e.g., energy storage systems and hydrogen technologies) and future electrical interconnections were discussed, as well as the role of the active energy consumer in the future energy system of Cyprus. The urgent need for coordination by the responsible bodies and organizations towards the joint preparation and implementation of strategic plans for the achievement of the optimistic energy and climate goals of Cyprus, as imposed by the European Union, was also stressed. The event ended with an open dialogue between the speakers and the audience.

CIGRE Cyprus will actively continue its activities in Cyprus by organizing future similar events and its positioning on current and future energy issues in Cyprus and worldwide in cooperation with the EAC and other relevant bodies in Cyprus.
