Electricity is precious. There are simple ways of saving it and achieving a lot. Lower consumption means greater savings.

Lower consumption, greater savings

  • During the summer months, use a fan rather than air-conditioning to consume a great deal less electricity. Air-conditioning units consume large amounts of electricity, especially during peak hours, resulting in much bigger bills.

  • Summers in Cyprus are particularly hot, so in many instances air-conditioning is essential. Have units serviced regularly, as this can save up to 30% of your electricity consumption and set the temperature at 26°C. For every degree below this, you will use 7% more electricity.

  • Take care that doors, windows, walls and ceilings are properly insulated. This can save up to 40% of the electricity you would otherwise consume.

  • By having air-conditioning/heating units serviced regularly, you can reduce electricity consumption by up to 30% and, by extension, reduce your bills.

  • Choose solar heaters, which do not use electricity, for your hot water.

  • Don't leave the water heater/boiler on. For your own convenience and to reduce your electricity bills, put a reminder on your mobile phone or use a timer on the heater.

  • Keep the refrigerator away from places that are exposed to the sun and away from appliances that produce heat, since this can increase its electricity consumption by as much as 30%. Defrost it frequently and always keep the fridge door closed.

  • Replace conventional incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs, which reduce electricity consumption by up to 70% and last 10 times longer.

  • When cooking, use a pressure cooker which not only saves electricity by 30%-60% but saves time too.

  • Washing clothes and dishes is an integral part of the daily routine. To reduce electricity and water consumption, fill the washing machine/dishwasher before every use and set the lowest possible temperature.

  • An electric iron uses the same amount of electricity as 10 100-watt lightbulbs. By ironing synthetic fabrics on a low setting and by folding large items before ironing, you can achieve considerable savings.

  • Unplug small devices such as phone chargers when you are not using them.

  • Switch off other devices, such as the TV, rather than leaving them in standby mode, when they continue to consume electricity.

Tips for the safe use of electrical devices/appliances

  • Make sure that any electrical devices/appliances that you buy have been manufactured according to International Safety standards.

  • If you notice that a device/appliance is not working properly, unplug it immediately before investigating. Don't try to repair it yourself. Call a technician.

  • If a plug is broken or cracked, replace it at once.

  • See that the colours of wires/cables are correct and the same as those used throughout Europe.

  • For safety reasons, all electrical installations are earthed. Use three-phase sockets and check that they are properly earthed.

  • Never connect a three-phase cable to a two-phase socket.

  • Use sockets that close all three shutters. Alternatively, insert a safety plug.

  • Never replace a fuse with one for a higher voltage.

  • 13 amp plugs have their own fuses, which can be easily replaced. They are brown in colour.

  • Avoid using two-pole plugs for devices/appliances that require earthing.

  • By using short cables on your devices/appliances, you not only save electricity but reduce the likelihood of an accident.

  • For lighting, use the size of light bulb recommended by the manufacturer. Don't attach the lampshade to the bulb.

  • Before cleaning an electrical device/appliance, check that the socket is switched off and unplug it.

  • Never fail to replace a faulty/broken switch.

  • Avoid using multi-plug adaptors as much as possible. If necessary, use them only for small devices/appliances.

  • Make sure that the bars of an electric heater have a protective covering. To clean it, unplug it from the socket first.

  • Avoid pulling the vacuum cleaner by the cable. For the maximum efficiency and safe use, service it regularly.

  • If you have radiators at home, make sure that they are always uncovered.

  • When changing a lightbulb, first switch off the electricity and wait a few minutes for the bulb to cool down before removing it.

  • Make sure that the fan cable is far from the blades and that they are well protected.

  • If you use gardening tools, make sure that the outdoor sockets are covered and that they operate via an earth leakage current breaker.

  • Outdoor lighting is essential if your garage or workshop is separate from the house. You should consult a specialist before installing it.

  • Don't use metal constructions such as vine supports or drying racks for outdoor lighting.

  • Water is a good conductor of electricity so, for your own safety, never touch plugs or sockets with wet hands.

  • If a piece of bread becomes stuck in a toaster, don't try to remove it with a knife or fork. Switch off the electricity and remove the piece by opening the bottom of the toaster.

  • Before filling a kettle, make sure that it is switched off.

  • Don't install electrical sockets in the bathroom. Water and steam increase the risk of electrocution.

  • Avoid letting the cable curl around an iron when it's hot. At the same time, always replace a frayed cable. If you use a steam iron, always unplug it before filling.
