​UNESCO observes 16 May as the International Day of Light. It is a symbolic day, dedicated to light-based technologies and applications, which promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in a range of areas of human activity.

One such area, with a direct link to light and energy conservation, is street lighting. EAC undertook a massive project of replacing old energy-intensive street lights in every community and most municipalities in Cyprus with new technology LED lamps, thereby creating energy savings of around 60%.
